Lawyers made up 24 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. I guess you could say that although we have a healthy respect for authority, we attorneys will inherently believe that laws can be better written, better enforced, and always amended, and we won’t always like all of them.
Whatever your practice area, there’s probably some portion of you that isn’t afraid to root for the little guy and wants to shuck off the constraints of something in your life. Maybe you believe that the law is the great equalizer, and that you became a lawyer to initiate your own fight for independence for your clients. Maybe you become a lawyer to make as much money as you possibly could, which in itself is something of its own fight for independence in life. Maybe you wanted your own business so that you would have the flexibility of life, and independence of time. Whatever the need, there is a desire for independence in all of us.
Denis Waitley once said, “The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” What about your own life though? Can you give your children “the wings of independence” if you don’t have them yourself?
If you’re well into your career and waiting for the money to be right before you take on the independent life you’re been craving, keep in mind Henry Ford’s quote, “If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.”
Whatever your background, practice area, or purpose and intent, the fight for independence in life and the law runs through most of us to some extent. When you think of your best life in the law, do you imagine complete independence in some area of your life? I’m going to bet you do. Why not begin by putting your knowledge, experience and ability to work in reaching your desired level of independence?
On this Independence Day, 2014, make this the day that reinvigorates your own fight for independence in whatever area of your life you feel confined. There is no opportunity like that provided by today to go out and live The Lawyer Life to the best of your ability.
